Uporaba določnega člena “the” se morda na prvi pogled zdi nekoliko težavna, a v resnici temu ni tako, če upoštevate spodnja pravila.
Določnega člena “the” NE uporabljajte pred imeni:
– celin (Asia, Africa, Europe)
– gora (Mount Everest, Triglav, Kilimanjaro)
– otokov v ednini (Antigua, Sicily, Crete)
– ulic (Wall Street, Abbey Road, Wilson Avenue)
– mest (London, Ljubljana, Paris)
– jezer (Lake Bled, Lake Baikal, Lake Victoria)
– zveznih držav (Florida, Washington, Nevada)
Določni člen “the” UPORABLJAJTE pred imeni:
– otočij v množini (the Canaries, the Maldives, the Pacific Islands)
– gorovij (the Alps, the Andes, the Himalayas)
– rek, morij in oceanov (the Mississipi River, the Dead Sea, the Atlantic Ocean)
– puščav in polotokov (the Mojave Desert, the Balkan Peninsula)
– regij (the Middle East),
– posameznih geografskih točk (the North Pole, the Equator)
– imen s frazo “of” (the Republic of China, the Isle of Man)
